WA State Event Recycling Laws
Events and vendors should be aware of applicable laws. Find details at www.ecology.wa.gov
- Event Recycling Law (RCW 70A.200.100): The law states that “in communities where there is an established curbside service and where recycling service is available to businesses, a recycling program must be provided at every official gathering and at every sport facility by the vendors who sell beverages in single-use aluminum, glass, or plastic bottles or cans.” This went into effect in Washington on July 22, 2007.
- Plastic Product Degradability Act (RCW 70A.455): As of Jan. 1, 2024, compostable products need to be labeled according to the law. These types of products and packaging go in the garbage and are not allowed in recycling or organics/food waste carts.
- The 2021 Plastics Law (RCW 70A.245) covers the following items:
- Plastic Bag Ban prohibiting single-use plastic carryout bags.
- Single-use serviceware ban restricts restaurants and food service businesses from automatically providing single-use serviceware with customer orders.
- Expanded polystyrene ban prohibits the sale of specific types of expanded polystyrene products.
